Gait Training
Gait training is learning how to walk again after injury or with a disability. Many lower extremity injuries affect a patient’s ability to walk normally. A physical therapist can retrain you how to walk normally again following surgery or injury. Gait training involves analysis of a patient’s dysfunctional gait pattern to determine the cause of gait abnormality. A physical therapist will help the patient correct the gait dysfunction using unique exercises and activities that have been developed to correct gait dysfunction.
At Emery Physical Therapy, we offer hands-on gait training, treadmills and other support devices to use as an aide until you are ready to move more independently – the ultimate goal of gait training.
Gait training can be useful for people with or who have had the following conditions:
- Stroke
- Amputation
- Osteoarthritis
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Cerebral Palsy
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- After surgery
- Sports injury
Your physical therapist will assess your walking through a series of tests in order to decide on the best method of treatment for you.
