How we treat it

Therapeutic Exercise

At Emery Physical Therapy, your therapist will take you through a variety of therapeutic exercises specifically for you. We take pride in our treatments and do not treat with a “cookbook” approach where all patients get the same exercises. We tailor your program for you and your goals to get you back to where you want to be in life.

Therapeutic exercise is defined as bodily movement prescribed to correct an impairment, improve musculoskeletal function, or maintain a state of well-being. It may vary from highly selected activities restricted to specific muscles or parts of the body, to general and vigorous activities that can return a recovering patient to the peak of physical condition. Therapeutic exercise seeks to accomplish the following goals:

  •  Ambulation (walking)
  •  Release contracted muscles, tendons, and fascia
  •  Mobilize joints
  •  Improve circulation
  •  Improve respiratory capacity
  •  Improve coordination
  •  Reduce rigidity
  •  Improve balance
  •  Promote relaxation
  •  Improve muscle strength and, if possible, achieve and maintain maximal voluntary contractile force (MVC)
  •  Improve exercise performance and functional capacity (endurance)

Types of therapeutic exercise

  •  Endurance training
  •  Resistance training
  •  Flexibility training
  •  Balance training
  •  Plyometric (jump) training
  •  Sport Specific training
